Just as a matter of interest has anyone not part of a veterans family managed to get tickets to the ceremony at Omaha beach- tried a couple of times but reply said they were full- has this not been opened to the general public?

Tom,
It's been opened up to the general public, but they are being picky about who they accept. You have to state a connection with D-day in 25 words, plus the conditions are very strict

According to the American Embassy all applications had to be in by May 28th. You can find info here http://france.usembassy.gov/
